  • Fourth major award for the all-new Mk8 Golf GTI, having been named a Car and Driver 10Best and Editors’ Choice, as well as Sports Car of the Year by Forbes
  • All-new Mk8 Golf GTI delivers the most dynamic driving experience from the hot hatch yet, with more horsepower, a reconfigured sport suspension, and new vehicle dynamics settings

Volkswagen of America, Inc. is proud to announce that Autotrader has named the 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI to the web site’s annual Best New Cars list.

“The eighth generation of VW’s affordable and fun performance car, the 2022 Golf GTI now has an Audi-like interior, compelling tech, more power and a modern new look,” said the editors of Autotrader. “The Golf GTI’s 2.0-liter turbocharged engine also makes impressive power, paired through a standard 6-speed manual transmission.”

“The GTI is the heart and soul of the Volkswagen brand,” said Hein Schafer, Senior Vice President, Product Marketing & Strategy, Volkswagen of America, Inc. “The Mk8 amps up everything that’s been great about GTI for nearly 40 years, from performance to handling, and adds a high-tech interior and feature set to match.”

The Best New Cars for 2022 is comprised of 12 vehicles selected by a team of experts at Autotrader, who collectively tested and ranked new models using a range of criteria. Because there are many new or redesigned vehicles for 2022, the editors focused on models that would be available for purchase within the next nine months and included vehicles they think offer significant value or are groundbreaking in some other way. They also capped the price at $110,000 for the base model, although most cars on the list are available for tens of thousands of dollars below that.

The 2022 Golf GTI continues the tradition of affordable performance it has built since its U.S. debut in 1983. Nearly 40 years later, the eighth-generation icon embodies the very same formula—refinement, style, power, and playful performance.

With an entirely new electronic architecture, this is the Golf GTI for the digital age. A new, digitally-networked world of displays and controls enables the driver to customize the look and technology of their Golf GTI more intuitively, and in greater detail, than ever before. At the same time, drivers have greater control of handling characteristics. The new vehicle dynamics system makes its debut in Mk8 Golf family, controlling the XDS® electronic differential lock, the VAQ electronically-controlled, torque-sensing, limited-slip differential, and also the lateral dynamics of the optional DCC® adaptive damping system.

The new Golf GTI is also more powerful than ever before. Its 241-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbocharged direct-injection EA888 evo4 TSI® engine, with maximum torque of 273 pound-feet, can be coupled with a standard manual six-speed transmission or an optional seven-speed dual-clutch automatic (DSG®).

Now built in Wolfsburg, Germany, the GTI S is very well equipped at a starting MSRP of $29,545 for the manual transmission and a starting MSRP of $30,345 for the DSG dual-clutch automatic. Destination for all Golf GTI models is $995.
