Stocks of frozen and chilled meats in cold storage facilities totalled 128 080 tonnes as of January 1, 2024, up 3.0% compared with October 1, 2023. However, this represents a 7.5% decrease from January 1, 2023. As of January 1, 2024, stocks of frozen and chilled pork (77 782 tonnes) continued to make up the largest proportion of frozen and chilled meats in cold storage facilities in Canada, followed by stocks of frozen and chilled beef (35 064 tonnes). Canadian quarterly stocks of frozen and chilled meats Stocks of frozen and chilled pork in cold storage facilities were down as of January 1, 2024, compared with October 1, 2023 (-0.5%), and January 1, 2023 (-1.2%). As of January 1, 2024, stocks of frozen and chilled pork in Quebec declined (-11.5%) compared with October 1, 2023, while pork stocks in Manitoba increased (+26.3%). These trends mirror those seen in provincial hog slaughter, as Quebec's hog slaughter has declined for two consecutive quarters, while hog slaughter in Manitoba has increased over the same period. As of January 1, 2024, stocks of frozen and chilled beef were up 16.4% compared with October 1, 2023, possibly because of increased beef slaughter in the second half of 2023 compared with the first half. However, when compared with January 1, 2023, stocks of frozen and chilled beef were down 15.2%. Lower cattle slaughter paired with higher beef exports in the fourth quarter of 2023 compared with the same period in 2022 may have contributed to this decline. At the national level, Quebec held 42.6% (33 115 tonnes) of the stocks of frozen and chilled pork as of January 1, 2024, while Ontario held 44.5% (15 608 tonnes) of the stocks of frozen and chilled beef.
