Stocks of frozen and chilled meats in cold storage facilities totalled 126 121 tonnes as of July 1, 2023, a decrease of 12.1% compared with April 1, 2023. This also represents a decrease of 15.1% from July 1, 2022. As of July 1, 2023, stocks of frozen and chilled pork (78 224 tonnes) continued to make up the largest proportion of frozen and chilled meats in cold storage facilities in Canada, followed by stocks of frozen and chilled beef (31 498 tonnes). A decrease in hog slaughter in the second quarter of 2023 compared with the previous quarter may have contributed to a 7.2% decrease in stocks of frozen and chilled pork in cold storage facilities as of July 1, 2023 when compared with April 1, 2023. Stocks of frozen and chilled pork were also down (-12.6%) on July 1, 2023 compared with the record high from 2022 for the July reference period. More competitive pork prices for consumers when compared with beef prices may have contributed to the decline in stocks of frozen and chilled pork. As of July 1, 2023, stocks of frozen and chilled beef were down 18.2% compared with April 1, 2023 and down 30.1% from July 1, 2022. A decrease in cattle slaughter in the first quarter of 2023, which continued into the second quarter, may have contributed to these declines. Quebec (35 592 tonnes) held 45.5% of the stocks of frozen and chilled pork nationally as of July 1, 2023, while Ontario (15 202 tonnes) held 48.3% of the stocks of frozen and chilled beef.
