Finland , January 26, 2022 (press release) –

Savon Voima Oyj and Joensuu Biocoal Oy have decided to establish a joint biomass procurement company, Biomassa Oy in Eastern Finland.

The creation of the procurement company is based on Joensuu Biocoal Oy's new bioinsurity plant producing torrefied biomass. Joensuu Biocoal Oy is a company founded by taaleri Group, which focuses on renewable energy and the bioin industry.

The new bio-industry plant will rise in connection with Savon Voima's Iiksenvaara power plant in Joensuu and the plant is scheduled to start in mid-2023. The operations of Biomassa Oy in Eastern Finland will start in spring 2022. The operations are based on Savon Voima's long-term acquisition experience and new operating models.

In addition to the biomass deliveries of the bio-industrial plant to be completed and the Joensuu power plant, the joint purchasing company is also responsible for purchasing the biomass of Savon Voima's approximately 20 other energy grids. Measured by today's volumes, Biomassa Oy in Eastern Finland will become the fifth largest biomass procurement company in Finland. The company will acquire approximately one million solid cubic kilometres for its shareholders, i.e. approximately two terawatt hours of biomass per year in full volume. Compared to Savon Voima's current acquisition of biomass, usage will increase by approximately 45 per cent.

The aim of the joint company is to secure and improve the efficiency of the purchase of biomass for all Savon Voima plants and to ensure the raw material supply of Joensuu Biocoal Oy's new bioindote plant. The establishment of this company is part of Savon Voima's investments in security of supply based on finnish biomass. The strong increase in the use of biomass is a great opportunity for forest owners and biomass supply chains in the area.

"We want to be a forerunner in the procurement of biomass in the finnish energy industry and thus promote completely carbon-neutral energy production in accordance with our goal. Cooperation with the new bioeconomy plant enables a new vision for the acquisition of biomass and creates significant synergies for all parties involved," says Juha Räsänen,Business Director at Savon Voima.
