NEW YORK, June 25–Simon & Schuster today announced that Wibke Grutjen has been named Senior Vice President, Global Chief Marketing and Communications Officer. The announcement was made by Jonathan Karp, President and CEO of Simon & Schuster, to whom Ms. Grutjen will report. Ms. Grutjen, who will also be a member of Simon & Schuster’s Executive Committee, comes to Simon & Schuster from Hachette Book Group, where she has served as Chief Marketing Officer since 2019. Ms. Grutjen started her career in the United Kingdom as an Editor of ARTbibliographies Modern in Oxford, England. After moving to the United States in 2003, she worked in television production for networks and channels including WETA, ABC News, and The History Channel. In 2007 she joined Penguin UK as Head of Business Information, and in 2010 she joined the Digital Marketing department at Macmillan Publishers in New York, ultimately rising to Vice President, Digital Marketing. “Wibke’s international background in media and marketing makes her an ideal choice for this new position, which will combine our corporate marketing and communications teams to establish a more unified approach to our messaging on behalf of our authors and their books throughout the world,” said Jonathan Karp. “Wibke possesses the vision, experience, acuity, and skill to lead Simon & Schuster’s superb marketing and communications departments through an increasingly sophisticated landscape of data analytics, artificial intelligence, ecommerce, targeted advertising, social media, and public relations.” “I am excited to be joining Jonathan Karp and the team at Simon & Schuster,” said Wibke Grutjen. “I have watched with admiration their dynamic approach to delivering impactful multi-channel marketing campaigns and reaching consumers for their authors, while boldly pursuing innovation in a time of transition for their company and our industry.
