Spanish printer’s revenue grew more than 60 percent after installation of its two Truepress printers

Producciones Digitales Pulmen, the leading Spanish digital print company specialised in the printing and binding of books, has installed a second SCREEN Truepress 520HD+ in two years’ time. It also purchased SCREEN’s EQUIOS PT-R software to build print management workflow for various printing devices.

Pulmen purchased its first Truepress 520HD+ in June 2019, allowing it to replace the production of seven smaller toner presses. “When we put our first Truepress into operation in 2019, we immediately reached great results, which made us quickly consider to purchase another one. With the addition of the two Truepress printers we have not only increased our turnover by more than 60%, but we have also achieved qualitative growth with more capacity to give our customers the best service even in peak season,” says CEO Fernando García Rodriguez who runs the business together with co-founders CFO María Ángeles García and Head of HR María Ángeles Soria García.

With both Truepress 520HD+ printers, Pulmen now can produce more than 2,500,000 books per year. Both machines are competitive up to a print run of currently 2,500 copies. “The market is moving towards shorter book runs. Small and medium runs, up to 2,000 copies, are becoming the norm. This is where inkjet technology comes in, which gives a wider range of possibilities.”

“We opted for Truepress again because it gives us the quality of traditional printing with the speed and flexibility of digital technology. The Truepress 520HD+ offers a maximum resolution of 1,200 dpi, and a drop size of 2 picolitres. Moreover, with digital printing, there is no difference in quality between a long and a short print run and there is no need for manual intervention to check the quality.”

“Thanks to the technology of Screen SC inks and the professionalism of our team we have been able to print on any type of paper, without any treatment of the paper required. The machine provides print quality similar to that of a traditional printing press, and reduces our carbon footprint by saving both energy and chemicals.”

The 520HD+ printing lines allow for production at up to 150 meters per minute, further reducing Pulmen’s delivery time. “This goes hand in hand with the automation of the rest of the process, from the entry of the purchase order to the delivery of the product, which gives us great versatility and allows us to offer a quick and personalised response to our clients. With the speed of the Truepress 520 HD+, we can put virtual stock into practice and reduce the risk of unnecessary printing.”

Pulmen switched to SCREEN’s EQUIOS PT-R software in 2020, to control all its printing machines with the same software. “EQUIOS PT-R has enabled our prepress employees to prepare twice as many print jobs per day. They only have to perform a single ripping of the files sent by the client. This is a big time saver, especially for re-prints of previous jobs.”

Having taken a big step forward in the Spanish digital publishing market, Pulmen  is now looking across the border for opportunities in other European countries, says Fernando García Rodriguez. “We believe that with these machines and other new investments we made we will be able to double our turnover. We’ll continue being a specialist in textbooks, while also growing in literature and the packaging market.”
