Simon & Schuster Canada is thrilled to announce the launch of Scribner Canada. Dedicated to publishing the best literary fiction and nonfiction from Canada and around the world, the imprint will highlight unique contemporary authors, celebrate the art of storytelling, and will also feature works in translation by both Canadian and international authors.

“I’ve long admired Scribner US and their venerable list of authors, and am excited to launch this new imprint that will complement and support our existing local publishing program, with its numerous bestsellers. The creation of Scribner Canada will broaden our publishing reach, bring new voices to readers, and grow our already stellar list of authors,” says Kevin Hanson, President and Publisher, Simon & Schuster Canada.

Since its founding in 1846, Scribner has been emblematic of high literary quality, having published iconic twentieth-century American authors such as Edith Wharton, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Thomas Wolfe, and Ernest Hemingway. Scribner US’s distinguished list now includes Annie Proulx, Jesmyn Ward, Jennifer Egan, Frank McCourt, Stephen King, Don DeLillo, Jeannette Walls, Andrew Solomon, Siddhartha Mukherjee, Colm Tóibin, Rachel Kushner, Anthony Doerr, and Miranda July. Simon & Schuster Canada is proud to join the UK and Australia in establishing this iconic imprint in Canada.

Scribner Canada will launch in Fall 2022, beginning with the highly anticipated We Spread, by acclaimed author Iain Reid, a genre-bending novel examining the nature of loneliness, age, and memory. Anonymous Content has acquired We Spread, with director Minahl Baig and Reid teaming up to adapt the screenplay. He has written two critically acclaimed, award-winning books of nonfiction, and his internationally bestselling debut novel, I’m Thinking of Ending Things, has been published in more than twenty countries and turned into a Netflix movie by Oscar-winner Charlie Kaufman. His second novel, Foe, an instant bestseller, was acquired by Amazon Studios with Reid co-writing the screenplay and set to executive produce. The film will star Saoirse Ronan, Paul Mescal, and Aaron Pierre.

The Long Road Home, by Debra Thompson, the first Black woman to be hired and tenured in the political science department at McGill University and an internationally recognized expert on race and ethnic politics, is the first major work of nonfiction on the Scribner list, also publishing in Fall 2022. In this profound and personal narrative, Thompson follows the roots of Black identities in North America, starting with her own family who travelled the Underground Railroad to Shrewsbury, Ontario, and then tracing her journey across America in search of blackness and belonging.

Other forthcoming titles by Canadian authors on the Scribner Canada imprint include:

In the Belly of the Congo by Blaise Ndala, an English translation of his internationally acclaimed and award-winning novel Dans le ventre du Congo. Winner of the Prix Kourouma and the Prix Ivoire for African Literature, and a finalist for the Grand Prix du Roman Métis and the Five Continents Prize, this literary novel examines Belgian Congo’s colonial past and its current legacy through the lives of two unforgettable characters, connected by family and history across continents and decades.
African Samuraiby Craig Shreve, a powerful literary historical novel based on the true-life story of Yasuke, Japan’s first foreign-born samurai and the only samurai to be of African descent.
The Boat in the Backyard by prominent screenwriter/TV producer Perry Chafe, a poignant coming-of-age story about a young boy on an island in Newfoundland and his connection to a teenage girl who has disappeared.
Upcoming international titles on the Scribner Canada imprint include:

Stolen by Sami Swedish author Ann-Helén Laestadius, winner of Sweden’s Book of the Year Award, a novel that has sold in over seventeen countries. Stolen follows Elsa, the nine-year-old daughter of Sami reindeer herders, who is threatened into silence after witnessing a man brutally killing her reindeer calf and a decade later still struggles to defend her Indigenous heritage in a hostile world.
The Most Secret Memory of Men by Senegalese novelist Mohamed Mbougar Sarr, an international sensation having sold to more than twenty-four countries and the first writer from sub-Saharan Africa to be awarded France’s oldest and most prestigious literary prize, the Prix Goncourt. The Most Secret Memory of Men is a gripping investigation into the life of a mysterious author in the vein of Roberto Bolaño’s Savage Detectives.
