With the inclusions, the company went from 22,000 hectares to 53,000 hectares of AAVCs and, in all, allocates more than 299,000 hectares of forests for biodiversity conservation Suzano, a global reference in the manufacture of bioproducts developed from eucalyptus cultivation, identified new Areas of High Conservation Value (AAVCs) among its forests in the state of Maranhão. AAVCs are areas that have values considered exceptional or critical for species diversity, maintenance of threatened ecosystems, promotion of environmental services and community values. Forming extensive ecological corridors, which provide the connectivity of the landscape between elements of fauna and flora, Suzano's AAVCs are located in rural properties of 13 municipalities, distributed between the states of Maranhão, Pará and Tocantins. In Maranhão there are 7 municipalities, totaling 34,500 hectares of native vegetation areas. "The Areas of High Conservation Value are extremely important for the preservation of biodiversity, especially in our case, where they are distributed among the Amazon and Cerrado biomes. As its name says, they are areas with a high degree of conservation and social importance, fundamental for the survival of native species and for the preservation of the identity of local communities", says Ana Paula Pulito, coordinator of Environmental Forest at Suzano. To be considered of High Conservation Value, areas must have one or more of the following attributes: Species Diversity (Areas containing concentrations of biological diversity including endemic, rare, threatened or endangered species); Ecosystems and Mosaics at Landscape Level and Intact Forest Landscapes (Extensive areas of forests where viable populations of most or all natural species occur in natural patterns of distribution and abundance); Ecosystems and Habitats (Areas containing ecosystems, including habitats and biodiversity refuges); Ecosystem Services (Areas that provide basic environmental services in extremely important situations, from watershed protection, erosion control and barrier against destructive fires); Community Needs (Key Areas to meet the basic needs of local communities) and; with Cultural Values (Areas of extreme importance for the critical cultural, ecological, economic or religious identity of local communities). Preservation For the conservation of the attributes identified, Suzano has developed a set of measures, which includes several actions such as: monitoring of fauna and flora, analysis of vegetation cover via satellite and monitoring of anthropic pressures. The company also has programs for fire prevention and fighting, ecological restoration and environmental education as strategies to protect AAVCs. For identification, these forests are signposted with signs and are internalized in the company's geographic information systems. Currently, Suzano also has a forest base with more than 575,000 hectares present in three states, Maranhão, Pará and Tocantins, where about 299,000 hectares are destined for biodiversity conservation. The company's entire production is based on renewable eucalyptus plantations, which supplies the industrial unit located in Imperatriz (MA). In addition, among the company's commitments to renew life is the Biodiversity Goal, which aims to connect, through ecological corridors, 500,000 hectares of fragments of cerrado, Atlantic Forest and Amazon by 2030. The area is equivalent to four times the city of Rio de Janeiro.
