Pepperjack mid-strength Shiraz is a ground-breaking offering with 7% alcohol by volume, half the alcohol content of the original. Pepperjack is Australia’s #1 shiraz for value and the country's favourite partner for steak.
Treasury Wine Estates
(TWE) is setting a new standard in flavour and quality with the launch of its latest no and low alcohol offering: Pepperjack mid-strength Shiraz, a ground-breaking offering with 7% alcohol by volume, half the alcohol content of the original. With more consumers looking for options to moderate their alcohol intake, the company is revolutionising how the world enjoys wine.
TWE’s veteran Pepperjack winemaker
Richard Mattner
and the broader winemaking team have ensured Pepperjack mid-strength Shiraz retains the flavour and mouthfeel that’s made it Australia’s #1 shiraz for value and the country’s favourite partner for steak. Richard said: “It strikes a balance between the art of traditional winemaking that Pepperjack is renowned for, and the science of cutting-edge de-alcoholisation and flavour retention technology. The result is a palate that is rich, round and soft with concentrated berry fruits and soft velvety tannins – all the best bits of Pepperjack.” We took our time to get it right: it’s been 18 months in the making, utilising vacuum distillation to capture optimal flavour at lower alcohol levels, in comparison to more conventional methods that raise the temperature of the wine, which can compromise flavour.
As a global wine producer with extensive winemaking expertise, global reach, and cutting-edge de-alcoholisation technology, TWE is a leader in the no and low alcohol segment. It has committed to investing
$10 million
in research and development in the category, recognising the potential to offer wine lovers more choice while retaining the great flavour its portfolio of brands is famous for. Construction of a state-of-the-art no and low alcohol production facility at the company’s
Barossa Winery
and Production Centre in
South Australia
has started, with the large-scale machine utilising proprietary processing technology expected to be operational in early 2024. The 3-stage continuous wine de-alcoholisation system will operate under a vacuum, gently removing the alcohol content to less than 0.05% alcohol by volume. The separation and collection of the wine’s delicate flavour compounds allows winemakers to re-introduce them to the de-alcoholised wine at the end of the process, so the final product resembles the quality and characteristics of the original varietal as closely as possible.
Recognising the importance of increasing capability in this growing segment for winemakers of all sizes, TWE recently supported the nolo project developed in partnership between South Australia’s
Department of Primary Industries
and Regions, the
University of Adelaide
and the
Australian Wine Research Institute
. The world-first trial-scale facility in
Adelaide
fast-tracks the development of new products, giving consumers more choice and higher-quality alternatives for moderating their consumption of alcohol.
