PulpEye details its Industry 5.0 project, which aims to find more efficient, safer ways for remote monitoring of pulp mills; research areas include RedEye online analysis with RISE Processum for converting biomass into bio-oil, IT security, user interface

ÖRNSKÖLDSVIK, Sweden , March 24, 2022 (press release) –

Industry 5.0 is a recently started pilot project where PulpEye is the project owner. The project is two years long and aims to find more efficient and safer ways for remote monitoring of the mills' processes. Industry 5.0 is financed by the strategic innovation program Process Industrial IT and Automation and participating parties.

The project consists of five parts: RedEye as an online analyzer for an HTL pilot at RISE Processum, IT security, user interface, business model and application at a customer. PulpEye is involved in all five parts. Hydrothermal liquefaction, HTL, is a thermal depolymerization process used to convert wet biomass, lignocellulose, to bio-oil at moderate temperature and high pressure.

"Processum's HTL pilot is suitable for use in this very interesting project," says Öjvind Sundvall, CEO of PulpEye. “It is an interesting biorefining process where PulpEye's analyzer module RedEye has not been used before. But since RedEye is normally used for analysis of cooking liquids in the pulp industry, it fits well in this project. The project will also involve experiments with one of Processum's bioreactors. ”

"This is a very interesting project with a clear win-win situation," says Yvonne Söderström Nordin, Senior Project Manager at RISE Processum. “We will get much faster analyzes from the pilots and the intention is that PulpEye will have a secure transfer of a large amount of data. In the long run, a successful project will open the doors to remotely monitor and control processes in the mills in an efficient way globally ”.

“IT security is an important part of the project and necessary if Industry 5.0 is to gain momentum. It is therefore an advantage that both PulpEye and Processum are located in the same place, High Coast Innovation Park in Örnsköldsvik, which enables fast and close contacts during the project. One result we hope to achieve is that the technology can be used for upscaling of pilot plants where analyzers from PulpEye become a natural part, ”concludes Öjvind Sundvall.

Industry 5.0 is carried out within the Strategic Innovation Program Process Industrial IT and Automation, a joint venture by Vinnova, Formas and the Swedish Energy Agency. Project partners are PulpEye, RISE Processum, BillerudKorsnäs and Kondor Processoptimering and Telia participates as a stakeholder.
