Unicharm Corporation (CEO & President, Mr. Takahisa Takahara) announced its commitment to participate in the “Eastwood Climate Smart Forestry Fund I”, a forestry fund that Sumitomo Forestry Group aims to establish in the U.S. in June 2023.

About the forestry fund “Eastwood Climate Smart Forestry Fund I”

This fund will be operated by Sumitomo Forestry Group by purchasing and managing forests with investments from our company and other participating companies. Profits from timber sales and carbon credits generated from the forests will be allocated to the investing companies, thereby contributing to carbon offsetting for society as a whole.

Background of the Investment

We have defined to “To help achieve the SDGs” as our Purpose (raison d’être) and aim to solve environmental and social issues and contribute to local communities through our business activities. In order to promote these goals concretely, we announced our medium-to long-term ESG goals, “Kyo-sei Life Vision 2030,” in October 2020, and set “addressing climate change” as one of the key issues. To achieve this goal, we are working on initiatives such as recycling of used disposable diapers, efforts towards visualizing GHG emissions, and promoting the development of products with lower GHG emissions.

The fund formed by Sumitomo Forestry Group promotes contribution to the carbon offset for the society as a whole, and we have decided to invest in this project since there is a high affinity with our activities related to climate change.

Contribution to the 17 SDGs through investing in “Eastwood Climate Smart Forestry Fund Ⅰ”

Unicharm believes that investing in “Eastwood Climate Smart Forestry Fund I” will contribute to the following goals of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations in 2015.

    9. Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure       13. Climate Action       15. Life on Land

We will contribute to the achievement of the SDGs by solving environmental and social issues through our business activities, including the provision of products and services.
