According to Dryden, Ontario's Mayor Jack Harrison, the potential closure of Dryden Fibre Canada mill could trigger severe economic fallout, undermining the local and regional economy. He underscored how closures could cripple the interconnected forestry sector across Northwest Ontario. Despite ongoing environmental concerns due to mercury contamination caused by the mill in the 1960s and '70s, Mayor Harrison emphasized the need for solutions that didn't involve shutting down the mill. The local Grassy Narrows First Nation community, still suffering from the effects of this contamination, insisted on corrective measures or the mill's closure. First Quality acquired the pulp mill located in Dryden, Ontario, from Domtar in August 2023. Industry Intelligence editor's note: Information originally published in Pulp & Paper Canada.
