Revive Environmental selected for North Carolina's PFAS destruction program; company to process 1,000 gallons of firefighting foams with potential for 60,000-gallon expansion

February 4, 2025 (press release) –

Revive Environmental has been selected to provide PFAS destruction for AFFF under the  North Carolina’s Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF) take-back program. Spearheaded by the North Carolina Collaboratory and the Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM), this initiative addresses the environmental and public health challenges posed by Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS). With our proven expertise, Revive is leading the industry in the commercial adoption of AFFF destruction in a reliable, safe manner.

This program marks a significant milestone in our mission to combat PFAS contamination. An initial award of 1,000 gallons of AFFF for destruction highlights the program’s ambitious start. The State of North Carolina had stringent requirements for selection and should be commended for how they outlined their success metrics for the demonstration. Selection criteria included:

  • AFFF Destruction Prior Experience: Proof of processing over 1,000 gallons of total AFFF. Document prior AFFF projects, clients, volumes, and PFAS types destroyed.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Vendors must comply with federal, state, and local PFAS regulations and meet stringent liquid effluent MCL standards (e.g., PFOA ≤4 ppt, PFOS ≤4 ppt).
  • Project Scalability: Demonstrate capacity and timelines to destroy up to 60,000 gallons of AFFF if selected for full-scale implementation.

This award serves as our third state-level partnership following successful collaborations with Ohio and New Hampshire. These engagements underscore the scalability and reliability of Revive’s destruction solutions to eliminate PFAS at both state and national levels.

Building Momentum in AFFF State Takeback Programs

Across the United States, the momentum behind AFFF take-back and destruction programs is rapidly growing. North Carolina’s initiative is the latest example of a nationwide shift toward addressing PFAS contamination at its source.

Revive’s proven ability to handle complex program planning logistics, provide scalable solutions, and deliver measurable results has already made an impact in states like Ohio and New Hampshire. In Ohio, our team worked alongside state agencies to execute a seamless takeback and destruction program, processing thousands of gallons of PFAS-impacted materials. Similarly, in New Hampshire, we demonstrated the effectiveness of our technology in meeting and exceeding strict treatment objectives.

With up to 60,000 gallons of AFFF slated for destruction in North Carolina, this program reflects the growing demand for reliable and proven PFAS destruction methods. By partnering with states, municipalities, and fire departments, we’re providing a blueprint for tackling one of our time’s most persistent environmental challenges.

Our momentum is fueled by collaboration. We work closely with regulators, researchers, and industry stakeholders to ensure that every program is tailored to meet the specific needs of the communities we serve.

PFAS Annihilator®

At the heart of Revive Environmental’s approach is our patented PFAS Annihilator®, which leverages Supercritical Water Oxidation (SCWO) technology. This technology is designed to address PFAS destruction challenges in liquid waste streams including AFFF. It ensures the destruction of PFAS compounds, leaving no harmful byproducts or downstream contamination.

SCWO technology operates under extreme conditions of heat and pressure, breaking down even the most resilient PFAS molecules into simple, harmless compounds like carbon dioxide, water, and inert salts. Unlike traditional disposal methods, which often fail to completely eliminate PFAS and risk secondary contamination, our SCWO process breaks the PFAS bonds instead of relocating PFAS.

Key Advantages of SCWO Technology:

  • Efficacy: SCWO reduces PFAS levels in treated materials to parts-per-trillion (PPT) or non-detectable levels, consistently meeting or exceeding the EPA’s strictest drinking water and environmental safety standards.
  • Independent Validation: Our results are verified by third-party laboratories and academic researchers, ensuring full compliance with regulatory benchmarks.
  • Environmental Integrity: SCWO produces no harmful emissions or hazardous waste. Our main byproduct is clean water.
  • Scalability: SCWO is uniquely suited for state-level and nationwide programs that seek destruction. It is capable of processing large volumes of AFFF and other PFAS-impacted materials.

With the PFAS Annihilator systems, we’re not just destroying PFAS—we’re setting the standard for what’s possible in PFAS management. Revives technical know-how paired with the PFAS Annihilator empowers states, municipalities, and industries to address their PFAS challenges with confidence, knowing they’re implementing a solution that delivers PFAS destruction.

Revive’s Commercial Permitted Facility Operations: A Unique Industry Leader

Revive Environmental is proud to operate fully permitted commercial facilities that serve as centralized hubs for PFAS destruction. These facilities represent a cornerstone of our strategy to provide scalable, reliable, and environmentally responsible solutions for managing PFAS-impacted waste.

A Hub for Innovation and Efficiency

Our commercial operations are designed with scalability and efficiency in mind. By operating out of centralized, fixed facilities, we can handle large volumes of AFFF and other PFAS-impacted materials while maintaining rigorous compliance with state and federal regulations.

At our facilities, incoming AFFF is securely stored and carefully processed through our PFAS Annihilator SCWO systems. The entire operation—from receipt and storage to destruction—is conducted under controlled conditions, ensuring the highest safety standards, transparency, and environmental stewardship.

The Advantages of Our Permitted Facilities:

  • Streamlined Compliance: As the only company with fully permitted facilities for PFAS destruction, we eliminate the need for our partners to navigate complex regulatory hurdles.
  • Centralized Logistics: Our hub-and-spoke model simplifies the collection, transport, and processing of PFAS-impacted materials, reducing logistical risks and costs.
  • Safe Storage and Handling: Our facilities have robust storage solutions to securely contain AFFF and other materials until processing.
  • Efficient Scalability: With ample capacity and advanced SCWO systems, our facilities can scale to meet the needs of both state and national programs.

Leadership in Action

At Revive Environmental, we’ve always believed that addressing PFAS contamination requires more than innovative technology—it demands leadership, accountability, and a commitment to doing what’s right for the environment and public health. That’s why we’ve invested in developing and operating commercial-scale, fully permitted facilities that set the benchmark for the industry.

From the early stages of our first pilot programs to establishing fully operational facilities, we’ve demonstrated that safe, efficient, and compliant PFAS destruction is not just possible—it’s scalable. Every gallon of AFFF we process is a step toward a cleaner, safer future, and every program we complete adds to our growing legacy of environmental leadership.

Our facilities are dedicated to destroying PFAS and serve as centers for innovation and collaboration. Here, we turn scientific insights into action, tackling challenges head-on and consistently demonstrating our ability to address the toughest PFAS issues.

Scaling AFFF Destruction

Revive Environmental’s partnership with North Carolina represents a pivotal moment in the national effort to address PFAS contamination. By combining cutting-edge SCWO technology with the operational advantages of our fully permitted facilities, we’re delivering solutions as practical as they are groundbreaking.

As we continue to broaden our outreach, we remain committed to providing states, municipalities, and industries with the essential tools required to effectively address the challenges posed by PFAS. Our objective is to establish a sustainable future free from PFAS contamination. We invite states, municipalities, and large users of AFFF to engage with us in this critical endeavor.
