Mondi Świecie containerboard mill in Poland recently safely concluded its largest maintenance shut of 2024

December 17, 2024 (press release) –

In September, Mondi Świecie concluded its largest maintenance shut of the year.

Our Mondi Świecie mill in Poland has safely concluded its largest maintenance shut of 2024.
A maintenance shut is when we stop operations to perform planned works so that everything runs reliably. For our Świecie mill, this means conducting checks and replacing equipment with the aim of reducing emissions and improving energy efficiency.

Preparing for a maintenance shut is a monumental task that involves months of planning and coordination. There are several stages, from planning the scope and contracting services to aligning complex schedules and ensuring all parts and documentation are in order.

Once everything is in place, it’s time to execute, which often takes place around the clock. As many as 3,000 additional contractors can be on-site, illustrating the scale of the operation. Here, collaboration is key. Many people from various departments participate in the process. Unplanned things occur, and it’s important to look for solutions together.

During the shut, the site is buzzing with activity, including welding, grinding, lifting and high-risk work in close quarters. Safety is paramount, requiring careful months-long planning. Contractors submit detailed SHE plans, including risk assessments and training protocols, which our team reviews before work begins. Management is always present and has boots on the ground throughout daily meetings and engagement walkabouts to keep safety front and center.

What does it take to keep one of Europe’s largest paper mills running smoothly?

It all comes down to meticulous planning, cutting-edge upgrades and a shutdown operation that mobilises a substantial workforce. There are many crucial behind-the-scenes efforts that keep the mill safe, efficient and ready for the future.
