HERGEN has just delivered a modernization package for IPEL's PM3, targeting to increase machine’s production. The project includes the installation of a new Ribbed Steel Yankee Cylinder with hollow shaft gearbox, an updated of the steam and condensate system, the replacement of the Steam Heated Hood’s wet end and the installation of a new Press Roll. This upgrade not only enhances machine’s production capacity, but also results in significant energy savings, contributing directly to the environmental sustainability of the paper industry. PM3 Ribbed Steel Yankee Cylinder leaving HERGEN's Facility The Yankee Cylinder supplied to PM3, with a diameter of 3,660 mm and a face length of 3,100 mm, features welded heads, condensate collectors and a working pressure of 10 bar. The replacement of the existing plain surface Yankee Dryer by a new model with ribbed internal surface is one of the main improvements. This improvement has already demonstrated exceptional results in the case of IPEL's PM5, supplied by HERGEN in 2019, where the efficiency of the Yankee Cylinder contributed decisively to obtaining excellent operational results. In addition, the PM3 Yankee Cylinder has insulated heads, which significantly reduces heat losses. In conventional systems, the heat dissipated by the heads represents a constant waste of energy. With the insulation, this loss is minimized, resulting in steam savings of approximately 3 to 5%. This benefit also translates into greater safety for machine operators, since the external temperature of the insulated covers is considerably lower. The modernization of the PM3 not only generates economic benefits, but also plays a crucial role in reducing the environmental impact of production. The excellent drying capacity of HERGEN’s ribbed Smart Yankee Dryer allows significant energy savings, which reduces the specific demand for steam and, consequently, the burning of fossil fuels used in its production. This steam saving directly results in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, this package of upgrades carried out at IPEL’s PM3 is a milestone in the search for a more efficient and environmentally responsible production process, contributing to the minimization of the ecological impact of the paper industry. For HERGEN, it is a great pleasure to continue its long-standing partnership with IPEL, working together on projects that not only drive operational efficiency, but also promote sustainability. We are honored to be part of this success story and evolution, called IPEL
