May 31, 2022 (press release) –

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued its emerging viral pathogen (EVP) guidance in response to recent cases of monkeypox.

The guidance was created by the EPA to allow disinfectant manufacturers to submit data demonstrating a product’s efficacy against difficult-to-inactivate viruses, including monkeypox and other rare or novel viruses. The agency expects all products on its List of Disinfectants for Emerging Viral Pathogens to kill monkeypox when used according to the label directions. While there are no disinfectants specifically registered for use against monkeypox, all products with EVP claims have been tested against viruses that are more difficult to kill than monkeypox.

The complete list of disinfectants for EVPs can be found on the EPA’s website.
