Suzano develops projects to strengthen Pataxó villages in the far south of Bahia; company reaffirms its commitment to traditional indigenous communities, highlighting the positive results of relationship actions with indigenous communities in south Bahia

August 9, 2024 (press release) –

The company's actions are focused on education, promotion and appreciation of culture and guarantee of indigenous rights

On the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, celebrated on August 9, Suzano - the world's largest producer of cellulose and a global reference in the manufacture of bioproducts developed from eucalyptus - reaffirms its commitment to traditional indigenous communities, highlighting the positive results of the relationship actions with indigenous communities in the municipalities of Prado, Itamaraju and Alcobaça, in the extreme south of Bahia, which are part of the company's area of operation.

Donations and educational support

One of the most notable initiatives is the Kijêtxawê Project, which provides all indigenous communities with the donation of educational support materials for children and adolescents enrolled in public schools, whether state or municipal. In addition, there are also actions to encourage and guarantee rights and ongoing dialogue, carried out in a culturally appropriate manner, based on trust and mutual respect.

"All actions are duly aligned with indigenous leaders, respecting the specificities of each community and based on mapping the diversity of the school environment, social inventory and internal planning of the company. In addition to being a transversal action that serves all communities, it provides an opportunity for active dialogue through systemic meetings with the community and its respective leaders", explains Suzano's Social Relations analyst, Elton Ray Silva Santiago.

Another measure made possible by Suzano is the provision of transportation, with previously defined schedules to achieve the intended objectives in a peaceful and orderly manner, duly aligned and agreed with the leaders who aim to provide access and ensure that indigenous rights are realized by the government. Suzano also maintains a transparent dialogue with indigenous communities in the company's area of operation, through visits and systematic meetings in the communities, in addition to specific meetings when requested, held individually or collectively through its movements or Councils.

Constant dialogue

"Dialogue establishes an ethical and transparent relationship between the company and the community and contributes to understanding the universe of results achieved through this approach, thus enabling the identification of real demands, engagement and relationships, in addition to collaborating with the management of potential and real impacts of the company's operations", concludes Andreone dos Santos Souza, Social Relations coordinator at Suzano.
