SAO PAULO , September 2, 2022 (press release) –

Innovative technology reinforces the circularity of the production process in the pulp and paper industry

One of the main ingredients used in the formulation of fertilizers, potassium, began to be produced at Klabin's Puma Unit, in Ortigueira (PR). This is yet another initiative by the company in the search for innovative solutions, maintaining its commitment to sustainability and promoting circularity. With this, Klabin becomes the first pulp and paper industry in the world to produce the input.

Potassium sulfate will be extracted from the treatment of ash generated in the Recovery Boiler, in an unprecedented process. “The ash is treated to remove potassium and other elements, which are harmful to the operation of the boilers. With standard technology, these elements were removed and sent to the factory's effluent treatment. With the new technology, we will recover this potassium in the form of crystallized potassium sulfate. Thus, we have a new product, essential for the composition of fertilizers and fertilizers”, explains the director of Projects and Engineering at Klabin, João Braga. With the system, Klabin expects to produce around 22 tons of potassium sulfate per day.

The process will allow the company to directly use or sell potassium sulfate in bulk to the fertilizer production market. This novelty will also help to reduce the dependence on imports of the input. Data from the Federal Government indicate that, currently, Brazil imports 96.5% of the potassium used for soil fertilization, with half of this input coming from countries such as Russia and Belarus.

benefits

As Brazil is the major global producer of pulp from planted forests, the benefits of this new process become evident. “It is an important investment by Klabin in sustainability, using the by-products generated by the pulp and paper production chain. With the project, we are demonstrating a new route for obtaining potassium and contributing to the reduction of its imports. This first integrated unit already guarantees Klabin's self-sufficiency in this input”, emphasizes Francisco Razzolini, director of Industrial Technology, Innovation, Sustainability and Projects at Klabin.

In this way, the company is increasingly aligned with the UN's 2030 Agenda. Among the commitments assumed by the Company through the KODS (Klabin Goals for Sustainable Development), is the maximum optimization of resources in which waste generates value when reinserted into production systems. In addition, the implementation of this potassium sulfate extraction system meets the goals of Renewable Future and Sustainable and Circular Economy.
