ERLANGEN, Germany , April 4, 2007 (press release) – The Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group ( I&S ) has received an order from Mondi Packaging Frantschach GmbH, St. Gertraud, Austria, to equip its PM8 paper machine with new drive technology. The aim is to increase the production speed. The order is worth 1.2 million euros and completion of the project is scheduled for Fall 2007.

The Mondi Packaging group belongs to Anglo American plc and is a leading international manufacturer of packaging materials, as well as being one of the largest producers of kraft paper. In order to increase the production speed and bring the drive equipment up to the latest standard, Mondi Frantschach is currently upgrading its PM8 paper machine.

Siemens is supplying 25 drives based on three-phase technology, with a total output of 4100 kilowatts. The motors will be supplied with power via water-cooled frequency converters from the Simovert Masterdrives family made by Siemens. In order to adapt the power supply to the new level of performance, which is higher than that of the old drives, the output of a feeder transformer will be increased from 1,600 to 2,000 kVA, for example. Simatic PCS7 will serve as the control system for the multi-motor drive. For operator control and visualization, the WinCC human-machine interface system will be used.

Siemens is also responsible for project planning, hardware and software engineering, and installation and commissioning. After modernization of the PM8, all the paper machines of Mondi Frantschach will have a uniform drive system: the drives of the PM6 paper machine were modernized by Siemens in 2002, and PM7 will follow in 2004.
