Did you take your mother out to a restaurant for Mother’s Day over the weekend? If so, you weren’t alone.
According to a new survey by the National Restaurant Association, approximately 87 million adults planned to go out to a restaurant for a special Mother’s Day meal this year. The research also found that 34% of all adults planned to celebrate Mother’s Day by dining out at a restaurant. Of that number, nearly half were going out for dinner, making it the day’s most popular meal. Thirty-five percent of adults planned on taking their moms to lunch and 24% were dining out for brunch. Another 11% said they would go out for breakfast.
In addition, the survey found that 34% of adults planned to have a home-cooked Mother’s Day meal at their homes or someone else’s homes, while 8% of adults planned to order takeout or delivery from a restaurant.
Me? My wife and I hosted our own Mother’s Day brunch for our mothers at our house, with several other family members joining in the celebration. And we were one of the 8% who ordered delivery from a restaurant, specifically a cold-cut platter from the Country Deli Restaurant in Chatsworth, California.
Mother’s Day means big business not just for the restaurant industry, but the retail sector in general. Spending for the holiday was expected to total a near-record $23.1 billion this year, according to the annual survey by the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics. About $4.4 billion of that spending was forecast to be on special food outings like dinner or brunch. A total of 86% of Americans planned to celebrate Mother’s Day and spend an average of $180 per person.
The expected spending would be second only to last year’s $23.6 billion, the highest in the 15-year history of the survey at an average $186 per person.
Some people complain that Mother’s Day is little more than a “Hallmark-created” holiday, and perhaps it is. But it continues to bring in big business.
