UK-based ValueForm creates 100% straw-based packaging products as cheaper, eco-friendly, more sustainable alternative to plastic and paper packaging, including pizza discs, which will be in stores later this year; company is also making egg boxes

LOS ANGELES , July 16, 2014 () – As part of efforts to move the packaging industry away from paper and plastic, U.K.-based ValueForm Ltd. has developed pizza discs made entirely of straw for supermarkets and other food retailers, Food Production Daily reported July 16.

ValueForm began its research for creating the straw-based packaging in 2003, eventually moving into a commercial phase three years ago with disposable hospital items for the National Health Service.

The straw pizza discs are expected to be on store shelves later this year, according to Food Production Daily.

The company’s aim has been to create packaging that costs the same or less than paper or plastic, and is efficient and environmentally friendly.

Jaydeep Korde, founder of ValueForm, said it was challenging making food packaging that is durable and meets the high food safety standards. So far, the company has received positive feedback from a supermarket and the supply chain, he said.

The company is also currently working on creating straw egg boxes, according to Food Production Daily.
