WASHINGTON , July 16, 2014 (press release) – Senators Seek Vote on Sales Tax Fairness Legislation

The National Retail Federation issued the following statement from Senior Vice President for Government Relations David French on the introduction of The Marketplace and Internet Tax Freedom Act, which was introduced by Senators Michael Enzi, Richard Durbin, Lamar Alexander, Heidi Heitkamp, Susan Collins and Mark Pryor:

“The National Retail Federation applauds the introduction of this bipartisan piece of legislation that seeks to level the playing field between local, brick-and-mortar merchants and online retailers without creating or raising taxes.

“We appreciate the leadership of the bill’s sponsors and thank them for renewing their commitment to sales tax fairness.

“The retail industry has rapidly evolved over the last two decades with e-commerce and mobile commerce, and it is time for Congress to eliminate the sales tax disparity, which disproportionally impacts community and independent retailers.

“As the voice of the entire retail industry, NRF will continue to aggressively advocate for The Marketplace and Internet Tax Freedom Act with the hope that the bill moves quickly.”

NRF is the world’s largest retail trade association, representing discount and department stores, home goods and specialty stores, Main Street merchants, grocers, wholesalers, chain restaurants and Internet retailers from the United States and more than 45 countries. Retail is the nation’s largest private sector employer, supporting one in four U.S. jobs – 42 million working Americans. Contributing $2.5 trillion to annual GDP, retail is a daily barometer for the nation’s economy. NRF’s This is Retail campaign highlights the industry’s opportunities for life-long careers, how retailers strengthen communities, and the critical role that retail plays in driving innovation.
