LOS ANGELES , July 2, 2014 () – This Friday, I—like many Americans—will be with family and friends enjoying a barbecue in celebration of the Fourth of July. Not only are we celebrating our country’s declaration of independence from way back when, but also we’re celebrating the official start of the summer grilling season.

Just how many barbecues will American adults be attending this summer? According to a recent survey by Medifast, 52% plan on attending one to three, 32% say four to eight, and 16% plan on attending more than eight.

Now the barbecue I’m attending will be serving such food as hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken and ice cream. In other words: Standard American barbecue fare. And while the country as a whole may be more health conscious, the Medifast survey shows that such consciousness has yet to really permeate the summer barbecue landscape.

Seventy-seven percent of U.S. adults plan to have burgers on their summer barbecue menu, according to the survey, followed by hot dogs at 53% and chicken or beef kabobs at 45%. When it comes to dessert, 31% plan to serve fruit salad, followed by brownies and cookies at 25%, ice cream at 22% and popsicles at 5%.

I’m going to be eating some bad-for-you food on Friday. Sounds like I’ll have plenty of company.
