Candidate for New York's 21st Congressional District pledges to fight for Vermont Gas pipeline project, calling it 'essential' because it will cut IP's costs in Ticonderoga, providing the mill and the region with a better future, while lowering emissions

WATERTOWN, New York , June 17, 2014 () – The campaign of Matt Doheny, a Republican running for election in New York's 21st Congressional District, issued the following campaign news:

Yesterday, 21st Republican Congressional candidate, Matt Doheny visited Ticonderoga and pledged if elected to Congress that he would be a strong advocate for the Vermont Gas Project which would connect the community and one of the region's most important employers International Paper (IP) to a low cost natural gas.

"International Paper is an incredibly important North Country employer, not just because of the 600 direct jobs at the plant, but because of its role as a major consumer of forest products that are sourced regionally," said Doheny.

To facilitate the project, International Paper's Ticonderoga mill is committing to invest approximately $70 million to finance the extension of the Vermont natural-gas pipeline to the plant. The conversion to natural gas from number 6 fuel oil is also expected to decrease emissions by an estimated 25%.

Doheny concluded, "This project is essential to lowering costs and leveraging a better future for IP and the region. It will save jobs, be better for the environment and in Congress I will work hand in hand with community and company leaders to make it a reality."
