The former Hostess bakery in Biddeford that laid off about 400 workers after the company declared bankruptcy more than two years ago is up for sale by its new owner, Flowers Foods.
Flowers Foods, which for $390 million in early 2013 purchased some assets and brands previously held by Hostess, announced in March that it planned to sell nine bakeries and 21 warehouses it purchased but did not specify the locations it would sell. The company bought about 20 bakeries and 38 warehouses.
The sale of the Biddeford bakery rules out the possibility that Flowers Foods would reopen the facility and bring back any of the workers laid off from the plant.
"We have listed the Biddeford bakery and eight other closed Hostess bakeries for sale because they do not fit with our strategic growth plan and are located in areas where we have sufficient production capacity," said Flowers Foods spokeswoman Sally Bowman in an email.
She indicated equipment inside the building will either be sold or moved to other bakeries the company operates.
The 265,000-square-foot industrial bakery at 1 Baker's Way in Biddeford is listed with broker Tony McDonald of CBRE The Boulos Co. for about $8.5 million.
That brokerage has completed sales of other former Hostess assets in the state, according to its past transaction reports, including an 8,275-square-foot bakery in Augusta purchased by J&R Associates in May and a 22,300-square-foot warehouse purchased by Hackman Capital in October.
Flowers Foods also owns the Auburn-based LePage Bakeries, which it acquired in July 2012.
