AF&PA presents its 2014 Community Recycling Awards for Creativity and Volume to Nutley, New Jersey, which recovered highest amount of paper for recycling among entries in Community category; Nutley's program includes curbside collection, outreach events

WASHINGTON , June 18, 2014 (press release) – The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) presented the Township of Nutley, N.J., with its 2014 Community Recycling Awards for Creativity and Volume. The awards, which recognize outstanding paper recycling programs, were presented yesterday at the township's Board of Commissioners meeting.

Apart from curbside collection, the Township of Nutley's recycling program includes a variety of community outreach events. In addition, the program recovered the highest amount of paper for recycling of all applications in the Community category.

"AF&PA is proud to honor the Township of Nutley's recycling efforts with this year's Community Recycling Awards for Creativity and Volume. Their various outreach events gave members of the community increased access to recycling, which helped to raise their recovery rate," said Tim Crawford, senior vice president, operations & technology of Soundview Paper, who presented the award on behalf of AF&PA.

The Township of Nutley's recycling program began in 1981 with the collection of newspapers, aluminum and glass. Over the years, the township continued to expand its recycling program to include all mixed paper, corrugated cardboard and shredded paper. Nutley significantly increased its recycling efforts by instituting community outreach programs and events.

"On behalf of the Township of Nutley, I would like to thank AF&PA for both recycling awards. We are honored and motivated by this recognition and hope our efforts will inspire our community in the years to come," said Commissioner Joseph Scarpelli.

AF&PA recently announced that 63.5 percent of all paper consumed in the U.S. was recovered for recycling in 2013. Recycling programs such as the Township of Nutley's, combined with the recycling efforts of millions of Americans each day, help drive the industry toward its goal to exceed 70 percent paper recovery for recycling by 2020.
