K-C's paper mill in Barrow, UK, reaches about 1.5 million hours since last lost-time accident, following on last year's milestone of 1 million hours that was a first in the facility's 45-year history, attributes success to employee engagement in safety

LOS ANGELES , June 18, 2014 (Industry Intelligence Inc.) – Kimberly-Clark Corp’s (K-C) paper mill in Barrow-in-Furness, England, has achieved a new safety milestone of about 1.5 million hours since the last lost-time accident, reported the North West Evening Mail on June 12.

This achievement follows on the mill reaching 1 million hours without a lost-time accident last December, marking a first in the facility’s 45-year history.

In near miss reporting, the mill leads the U.K. paper industry, said the mill’s safety leader Karl Stephens, noting an improving safety trend for both employees and contractors since 2009.

This success is attributed to employee engagement, which Stephens says has been key. Meetings on safety are held every two weeks and employees receive regular briefings, the North West Evening Mail reported.

The entire workforce is offered a reward for safety progress. The Barrow mill itself received the K-C Crystal Globe award in March, after reaching the 1 million hours milestone.
