ALEXANDRIA, Virginia , June 13, 2014 () – United States Patent and Trademark Office has granted patent no. 8,739,802, on June 03, 2014, to R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company (North Carolina), titled as "Filtered cigarette"

According to the abstract released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "A filtered cigarette possesses a smokable rod and a filter element. The filter element possesses a segment incorporating filter material (e.g., cellulose acetate tow) having carbonaceous material (e.g., activated charcoal particles) or other adsorbent dispersed throughout the filter material, and encapsulated flavoring agent (e.g., flavor-containing microcapsules) dispersed throughout the filter material."
