Oregon-based Biogreen Sustainable Energy granted fourth extension on proposed 25-MW biomass plant in La Pine, Oregon; company hoping to use scrap wood from region's forestlands as feedstock

LOS ANGELES , June 9, 2014 (Industry Intelligence Inc.) – St. Helens, Oregon-based Biogreen Sustainable Energy Co. has been granted a fourth extension by Deschutes County for its proposed 25-megawatt biomass plant in La Pine, Oregon, The Bulletin reported on June 7.

The company has been considering the site for its US$75 million biomass facility for more than five years. It originally seemed ready to begin construction in 2011, but headwinds including the economic downturn, labor issues and an uncertain energy market keep delaying the project.

The site would allow the company to take advantage of the region’s forestlands and harvest scrap wood for use as a feedstock.

According to planning documents, many of the necessary land and building permits for the projects had been slated to expire soon.

The two-month extension should give the company enough time to meet with La Pine officials and discuss the status of the project, said Deschutes County Administrator Tom Anderson. He noted that none of the current city councilors were serving on the council when La Pine first approved the contract with Biogreen Sustainable Energy.

The proposed plant could potentially generate enough electricity for 10,000 to 25,000 homes.
