The government of Newfoundland has issued a request for proposals to tear down the former AbitibiBowater Inc. mill in Grand Falls-Windsor, VCOM reported on June 4.
One of the options being considered is to sell the recovered metal, as scrap metal from other mills that were demolished in Eastern Canada sold for millions of dollars. The province set aside demolition funds in its budget.
The mill has been idle since March 2009. In 2012, t
he province paid C$118 million to acquire the mill’s assets, including 220,000 hectares of woodlands, according to Industry Intelligence Inc.’s archives.
