The Nebraska National Forests & Grasslands, Pine Ridge Ranger District is hosting a public meeting to introduce and take comments on the Pine Ridge Landscape Restoration Project, a proposal to improve conditions of forest and rangeland health in Dawes County. The meeting will be held on Thursday, June 5 from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm at the Upper Niobrara-White Natural Resource District Office at 430 E. 2nd Street, Chadron.
According to Tim Buskirk, Acting Pine Ridge District Ranger, “This project has three key components: 1) to thin green timber areas south of Chadron; 2) to clean up ‘dead-and-down’ that remains following the 2006 and 2012 wildland fires; and 3) to clear debris and timber litter from riparian areas and roads following damaging storms late in 2013. Essentially our target area extends from East Ash Road to Bordeaux Road.”
Buskirk said, “We are hoping for great public attendance and participation, especially from all our partners who are doing other landscape treatments and improvements. We want to look at the maps together and have open conversations about the best implementation plan to leverage the most positive outcome for all.”
The opportunity to comment will begin upon publication of a legal notice in the Rapid City Journal and will continue for 20 calendar days thereafter. This will be the only public comment period on this proposal. Once printed, the proposal and maps will be available to the public at the Pine Ridge District Office 4 miles south of Chadron on US Highway 385 or on-line at http://www.fs.usda.gov/land/nebraska/landmanagement . Interested parties may also contact Paul Klug, Interdisciplinary Team Leader, at 406-752-6400 or by email at pklug@fs.fed.us
