Berry Plastics subsidiary Captive Plastics to build 20,000-sq.-ft. addition to facility in Dunkirk, New York, that will increase plastic bottle production capacity; manufacturer receiving 500 KW of hydropower from New York Power Authority for project

BUFFALO, New York , May 29, 2014 (Buffalo News) – A Dunkirk plastic packaging manufacturer is getting 500 kilowatts of low-cost hydropower from the New York Power Authority for an expansion project that is expected to create 10 new jobs.

Captive Plastics, a subsidiary of Berry Plastics Group, received the seven-year allocation of low-cost electricity to help it with an $18.5 million project to build a 20,000-square-foot addition that will increase the company's bottle production capacity.

The allocation of electricity approved Wednesday by the Power Authority is separate from a 1.3-megawatt allocation in December under the state's ReCharge NY program that was linked to the creation of 15 jobs at the company. The 10 jobs the company pledged to create in the latest allocation are in addition to the 15 it committed to adding with the ReCharge NY power grant. The company also said it would retain 50 existing jobs.

The company also is eligible to receive $979,000 in tax credits under the state's Excelsior Jobs Program if it meets its promised job creation and investment promises.

The Power Authority also approved a seven-year allocation of 100 kilowatts of low-cost hydropower to Durez, a Niagara Falls manufacturer of engineering thermoset resins and molding compounds. The power allocation is tied to an $800,000 project to expand its factory and repurpose equipment that currently isn't being used. The project is expected to create six jobs and retain 56 others.

Upstate Door, a hardwood door manufacturer in the Village of Castile, was granted 210 kilowatts of low-cost hydropower for a $2.2 million project to build a 30,000-square-foot expansion at its factory that is needed to meet rising demand. The plan is due to create 22 new jobs and retain 10 others.

Liberty Pumps, a Genesee County manufacturer of pumping products for ground water and wastewater removal, received 450 kilowatts of hydropower for a $7.5 million expansion project that is expected to create 26 new positions at its Village of Bergen factory and retain 134 others. Liberty Pumps recently was granted $1.3 million in tax breaks through the Genesee County Economic Development Center for the project.
