Approximately 262 workers from Great Northern Paper mill in East Millinocket, Maine, determined by U.S. Dept. of Labor to be eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance benefits, which helps trade-affected workers find new jobs, says Rep. Mike Michaud

WASHINGTON , May 28, 2014 (press release) – Assistance will help displaced mill workers get the resources they need to re-enter the workforce

Congressman Mike Michaud announced today that the U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL) has determined that approximately 262 workers from the Great Northern Paper Company in East Millinocket will be eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) benefits. Rep. Michaud worked at the GNP mill for three decades immediately prior to his election to Congress.

“I’m very pleased that the hardworking displaced East Millinocket employees – some of whom I worked with on the mill floor – are now eligible to receive this critical lifeline,” said Michaud. “It’s frustrating any time we see hardworking Mainers displaced because of trade policies that don’t go far enough in strengthening American industry. But for the workers in East Millinocket, I share their pain firsthand because of the time I spent working there, and because of the impact the disruption of the mill’s operations has had on my home town. This assistance is an important step toward helping the dedicated and skilled men and women from GNP.”

Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) is a program of the Department of Labor that helps workers who have lost their jobs as a result of increased imports or a shift of production outside of the United States. TAA provides these trade-affected workers with a variety of reemployment services and benefits to help them find new jobs and get back to work.

“My years at the mill in East Millinocket were incredibly formative for me – it is a place that helped shape my principles and values and inspired me to seek out a career in public service,” added Michaud. “These are good people. They have had their lives disrupted through no fault of their own and and this assistance will help them move forward.”
