US retailers experiencing 10% increase in bulk meat sales as national beef sales fall by volume due to record prices

LOS ANGELES , May 28, 2014 () – Like Chris Healey, owner of Fremont Meat Market in Fremont, Nebraska, many U.S. retailers have been experiencing an increase in bulk meat purchases throughout the past year, reported May 26.

While national beef sales decreased by volume due to record prices, sales of frozen meat bundles rose by more than 10% since this time last year, said Healey.

As more customers are purchasing smaller variety-pack bundles or traditional “sides” of beef, meat markets and farmers market vendors have gradually begun selling bulk meat packages for those looking to save money on their grocery bills.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, beef and veal prices, which are already at record highs after an 11% increase since April 2013, is expected to continue rising and exceeding the previous forecast, with an increase of 5.5% to 6.5% in 2014.

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association currently does not track bundle sales data but will soon start later this year due to the demand for meat bundles among customers.
