LOS ANGELES , May 26, 2014 () – Industry Intelligence editor’s note: Euro-Graph is no longer releasing its monthly statistics in the following month but is instead waiting two months. Thus, the March statistics were released May 26 instead of in late April.

Shipments of European graphic papers totaled 3.113 million tonnes in March 2014, falling 1.1% from those of March 2013, according to the European Association of Graphic Paper Producers (Euro-Graph).

This was the third consecutive month of negative results, following December 2013’s positive results, which marked the first time the figures had been positive year-over-year since January 2013’s 1.0% increase over January 2012.

In March 2014, as in the previous three months, uncoated woodfree (UWF) papers shipments were in the positive year-over-year ranks. Also uncoated mechanical (improved and others) papers showed gains year-over-year in March 2014. Euro-Graph’s other covered grades include newsprint, SC-Magazine, coated mechanical reels, and coated woodfree (CWF) papers.

In March 2014, the European graphic papermakers delivered 2.546 million tonnes to Europe, down 1.2% year-over-year, and they exported 567,000 tonnes, for a 0.6% decrease. Total European demand was 2.610 million tonnes, falling 1.3% year-over-year.

(European demand, which includes both Western and Eastern Europe, is partly estimated; for woodfree grades it excludes Russian domestic deliveries. Other than newsprint, for each of the three mechanical grades for which figures are shown, the shipments to Europe and the European demand are the same.)

Deliveries of UWF jumped 6.0% year-over-year, to 640,000 tonnes, in March 2014, following year-over-year gains in February 2014 of 1.8%, in January 2014 of 1.4% and in December 2013 of 4.3%. In March 2014, the UWF producers delivered 554,000 tonnes to Europe and 86,000 tonnes to outside of Europe, for respective increases of 4.7% and 14.8%.

For the first quarter of 2014, the UWF producers shipped 1.906 million tonnes, increasing 2.6% from the year-ago period. They shipped 1.649 million tonnes to Europe and they exported 257,000 tonnes, marking respective rises of 2.2% and 5.5%. European demand of 1.749 million tonnes was up 2.2%.

Coated mechanical reels deliveries in March 2014 of 588,000 tonnes fell 2.2% from a year ago. Producers shipped 454,000 tonnes to Europe down 3.2%, and they exported 135,000 tonnes, for an increase of 1.5%.

The year-to-date total of coated mechanical reels shipments was 1.709 million tonnes, declining 3.3%. This included 1.332 million tonnes shipped to Europe, down 3.2%, and 377,000 tonnes shipped to outside of Europe, falling 3.5%.
