LOS ANGELES , May 19, 2014 () – Swedish power company Vattenfall has accepted Swedish biomass energy company Vasa Värme’s offer to purchase its 94% stake in the Kalix Värmeverk biomass district heating plant, which has a capacity of 120 gigawatts (GW), Ends Waste & Bioenergy reported on April 24.

The facility’s primary fuel supply consists of forest products and sawmill residue, according to Vattenfall’s website. There have been trials using demolition wood—lumber and wood from demolished buildings, and old wooden packaging—as the primary fuel for the plant.

Sweden’s Kalix municipality, which passed on its opportunity to purchase Vattenfall’s share of the plant, will retain a 6% stake in the facility, Ends Waste & Bioenergy noted.

The sale constitutes part of Vattenfall’s efforts to balance its budget after posting a loss of €716,690 (US$1.2B) in 2013. Vattenfall is wholly owned by the Swedish government

Vasa Värme currently owns two similar facilities in Sweden. The company was formed in February 2014.
