April spot ethylene prices in Europe at €850/tonne free delivered on northwest Europe, while contract prices at €1,165/tonne free delivered on northwest Europe; disparity among prices may force contract prices to go down slightly

LONDON , May 19, 2014 (ICIS Chemical Business (CBNB Abstracts)) – In order to foresee the pricing of polyethylene (PE) in Europe, consumers are waiting for the contract prices of ethylene this May 2014 to set. However, some consumers are cautious of the pricing, saying that prices are most likely to go down than up. The decreasing tightness in the supply of LDPE this Apr 2014 could have an effect this May 2014, which may lead to no announced increase in PE prices. This Apr 2014, spot ethylene prices were at EUR 850/tonne free delivered (FD) on northwest Europe (NWE), while contract prices are at EUR 1165/tonne FD NWE. This disparity among the spot and contract prices may force contract prices to go down, albeit only mildly.
