According to an informed source, the Japanese government is reportedly discussing large cuts in its pork and beef tariffs in bilateral negotiations with the U.S. government on the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact, The Japan Times reported May 3.
Althought Japan currently imposes a tariff of up to US$4.73 per kilogram on lower-priced pork imports, a new proposal reportedly calls for lowering the levy to around $1.18 soon after the free trade deal would take effect, and eventually to 50 cents over a period of at least 10 years.
