The Assam Forest Employees' Union has demanded the rescue of Hindustan Paper Corporation (HPC) official Arindam Kar, who was abducted last Saturday, within the next 48 hours.
Though Assam, Tripura and Mizoram police have jointly started an operation to rescue Kar, supervisor of the forest department of Cachar Paper Mill under HPC, he has still not been traced.
Kar was abducted from Rangamati village on the Assam-Mizoram border in Karimganj district. The police superintendent of Karimganj, Bishnu Prasad Rabha, said the combing operation had been launched with the help of the police in places near the Mizoram and Tripura border. He said the operation is going on along southern Hailakandi's Mizoram border also with the help of Hailakandi police. He suspects that the militants have taken Kar to the jungles of Tripura.
Deputy police superintendent (Sadar) of Karimganj, Gaurav Kumar Agarwala, has been entrusted with the task of leading the search operation in the Tripura border areas, Rabha said.
He said the United Democratic Liberation Army is suspected to be behind the abduction and also reiterated that Kar would be released soon.
On the other hand, the additional director-general of police (SB branch), Pallav Bhattacharyya, spoke to Karimganj superintendent of police, Rabha and urged him to streamline the search operation.
Kar's wife and daughter have appealed to the kidnappers to release him on humanitarian grounds.
