A sawmill formerly owner by Emerald Forest Products in Emmett, Idaho, is to be renamed Gem Forest Products, LLC, after being sold to GreenFuels Holding Company, LLC, of Birmingham, Alabama, the Idaho Press-Tribune reported on April 30.
A spokesman at GreenFuels Holding Company confirmed that the sale of the property closed on Monday, April 28, the report said.
Emerald Forest Products opened the sawmill in 2010 with the support of US$4 million in federal economic stimulus money. Owner Dick Vinson also put up at least $7 million of his own funds for the project, which created 47 jobs. The sawmill officially closed its doors in February 2013 due to bankruptcy, putting the 25 workers employed there at the time out of work.
GreenFuels Holding Company, LLC manufactures and markets alternative fuels such as biodiesel.
Prior to the purchase of the property by Emerald Forest Products in 2010, the land housed a sawmill operated by Boise Cascade. At its peak of operation in the 1970s, the sawmill employed around 1,500 workers.
