A 32-year-old man died and two others suffered grievous injuries after they slipped and fell into the tank at the effluent treatment plant in the pulp mill section of Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited, here on Monday.
Sources said that John (32), Suresh (33) and Antony (20) were daily wage workers in the Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited. The accident occurred when they were cleaning the sludge that had formed around the inside of the effluent treatment tank, said sources.
John slipped when he was trying to remove the plug stuck in the outlet of the tank. Seeing this Antony and Suresh attempted to rescue him. But their efforts went in vain and finally all three were stuck in the outlet. They sustained severe injuries and were being suffocated inside, added the sources.
Some other persons managed to rescue them. John was seriously hurt and Antony suffered a fracture in his left leg. They were moved to a Coimbatore private hospital for treatment.
The police said that John died on the way to hospital near Kangeyam. The other two were admitted in the hospital and are said to be recovering. The Velayuthampalayam police have registered a case and the investigation is on. Published by HT Syndication with permission from New Indian Express.
