Oregon-based Boyd Coffee launching new generation of single-cup coffees for brewers that accept K-Cup portion packs

PORTLAND, Oregon , April 23, 2014 (press release) – Boyd’s Coffee® is launching a new generation of single-cup coffees for brewers that accept K-Cup® portion packs.* The cups’ soft mesh filter offers the same convenience as other single cups, only with significantly less packaging than the traditional rigid-side format. The mesh filter also enables coffee drinkers to experience the fresh-roasted coffee’s aroma; now single-cup coffee drinkers can wake up and smell the coffee.

The mesh filter also enables coffee drinkers to experience the fresh-roasted coffee’s aroma.

“We are launching the next generation of the single-cup coffee experience because we believe everyone deserves a great cup of coffee,” said Jeffrey Newman, President and CEO of Boyd Coffee Company. “We looked at other product designs in the single-cup category and knew that we could offer a vastly better coffee experience, with a design that minimizes waste.”

The coffees come in a variety of roast levels and include organic and Rainforest Alliance Certified™ options: French No. 6®, Red Wagon® Organic Coffee, Good Morning™, Hi-Rev® (delivers more caffeine), and Lost Lake™ Decaf Organic Coffee.

For home brewing, Boyd’s Coffee is offering a 12-count carton with a Fresh Lock® inner foil bag that seals in freshness. Grocers, including select Albertsons and Roth’s Fresh Markets, will carry the 12-count retail packages. They are also available online at www.boydscoffeestore.com. A 20-count carton with individually wrapped cups will also be available for office coffee, restaurants and other foodservice businesses.

Popularity of the single-cup format is growing among consumers, with single-cup sales now accounting for more than a quarter of every dollar Americans spend on coffee to drink at home. By 2018, market-research firm Mintel expects consumers to spend nearly as much on coffee pods as they do on bulk coffee.

The single-cup format is also growing in foodservice operations, including restaurants, hotels, convenience stores and office coffee.

“While most of our business partners will continue to brew Boyd’s Coffee the traditional way, adding a single-cup option gives them greater flexibility and profitability. For example, a restaurant owner might brew a single cup of decaf during a slower daypart for the freshest cup of coffee with the least amount of waste,” Newman said.

About Boyd Coffee Company: Boyd Coffee Company is one of the oldest family-owned coffee companies in the world. Founded in 1900 in Portland, Oregon, Boyd’s has a long, storied history of helping restaurants, hotels and convenience stores attract and keep customers by providing them with consistently excellent coffee, tea and other beverages.

At Boyd’s, we don’t believe that coffee bestows status or makes a statement about the person who drinks it. We believe that people are capable of making their own statements. We hold that coffee is fuel not fashion. It is what it has always been: a reward for good work done well and a kick in the pants to get back out there and do some more. That’s the legacy of coffee in America and that’s the Boyd’s legacy as well.
