GAF Roofing to build US$149M shingle lamination facility at Moberly, Missouri, expected to open by end of 2017, creating 125 jobs; state provided almost US$6M in incentives to New Jersey-based GAF, which had earlier considered Illinois

JACKSONVILLE, Illinois , April 22, 2014 () – Almost $6 million in incentives by Missouri officials helped land a new production facility for the nation's largest shingle manufacturing company, which had been eyeing Jacksonville at one time.

GAF Roofing announced the decision March 18 to locate its new plant in Moberly in central Missouri. The 320,000-square-foot facility is expected to open by the end of 2017 and employ about 125 people.

"We are excited to welcome GAF to Moberly, and we understand that this manufacturing facility will have a significant impact on the economy in northcentral Missouri," Moberly Mayor John Kimmons said.

The New Jersey-headquartered company spent several years evaluating sites. The Jacksonville Regional Economic Development Corp. started working on the project in October 2012. Representatives of the company visited Jacksonville in May and were presented some options for locating in the city.

At that time, Jacksonville was among five locations being considered and the only one in Illinois.

Late last year, it appeared Jacksonville was still in contention, but had fallen to the number two spot.

The company made the decision to by-pass Jacksonville last month. JREDC President Terry Denison said he found out about it last week.

"From a local viewpoint -- from the JREDC and the Jacksonville region -- I don't think there is anything else we could've done," he said. "We put together an excellent presentation and we had a good site for them."

GAF will spend about $149 million on the new 147-acre facility, which will serve as a shingle lamination facility.
