Russian agricultural output up 1.1% year-over-year in March to 421.7B rubles, according to government statistics; output in March up 1.3% to 185.2B rubles

MOSCOW , April 17, 2014 () – Russia raised agricultural output 1.1% year-on-year in January-March, the Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) said.

Farms of all categories, including agricultural organizations, private farms and household farms, had output of 421.7 billion rubles in the period, according to a preliminary estimate.

Farm output grew 1.3% year-on-year in March to 185.2 billion rubles.

Sowing operations were underway in 19 regions of Russia. Spring crops were sown in 761,000 hectares, including 539,600 ha of grains and legumes (excluding corn), 140% and 160% more year-on-year respectively.

Farms of all categories slaughtered 2.7 million cattle and poultry (live weight), 4.1% more than in the same period last year. Production declined for other animal products, including milk - down 1.4% to 6.1 million tonnes and eggs - down 2.5% to 9.5 billion units.

The same pattern held in March: live-weight cattle and poultry for slaughter rose 4.3% to 1 million tonnes, while milk production fell 1% to 2.3 million tonnes and eggs were down 2.8% to 3.3 billion units.

Inventories of feed per head of cattle were 8.2% higher at the end of March than a year earlier, Rosstat said.

Farms of all categories had 20.2 million head of cattle at the end of March, 2.4% less than a year earlier, including 8.7 million cows (2.7% less). They also had 19.7 million hogs (1% less), 25.2 million sheep and goats (0.9% less) and 510.4 million chickens and other poultry (1% more).

Household farms accounted for 45.5% of the cattle, 21.1% of the hogs, and 47.9% of the sheep and goats at the end of March, compared with 45.9%, 24.4% and 48.0% respectively a year earlier.
