HEIDENHEIM, Germany , April 3, 2014 (press release) – Bilfinger Maintenance Nord has chosen the new TurCon DTm turbine controller from Voith as part of a tandem turbine upgrade at the UPM paper factory in Ettringen, Germany. Following in-depth research and testing of a series of products, the digital TurCon DTm wins out over the competition. The new turbine controller features a highly flexible configuration and can reliably detect situations that could endanger the equipment.

The digital TurCon DTm steam turbine controller from Voith is fully equipped with all the relevant components – no need for any additional equipment. The result: reduced total cost of ownership for the operator. The wide array of TurCon DTm components includes an industrial CPU, I/O modules, speed measurement system, safety or TRIP relays, isolation amplifiers and a touchscreen display.

"The challenge we were facing was to convert our customer's steam turbines simply, cost-effectively and, most importantly, with as little downtime as possible. The goal was to find a product with high availability, maximum parameterization flexibility for the different industrial turbine applications and outstanding after-sales service. Our initial experience with the TurCon DTm has left us very satisfied with both the turbine controller and Voith's expert service," said Thomas Hartmann, Head of Turbine Service and Condition Monitoring at Bilfinger Maintenance Nord. The LifeCycle Partner also has high praise for the clear, easy to use operating concept of the TurCon DTm and the unbeaten price-performance ratio.

The TurCon DTm controls steam turbines of the most widely varied power classes and is particularly well suited for different control modes — from speed control via sophisticated frequency regulation all the way to complex extraction pressure control. Bilfinger Maintenance is excited about the prospects. "The controller's flexibility is unmatched on the market today," emphasizes Hartmann. Eugen Groth, a sales engineer for Drive Systems Turbomachinery at Voith, adds, "Communication and display have become very flexible and easy to use thanks to the comprehensive I/O functionality and the ability to integrate the turbine controller into existing Profibus networks."

Unlike comparable systems, the new turbine controller features an integrated speed measurement system with short-circuit and open-circuit monitoring. The controller does more than just monitor speed for plausibility – it also monitors the electric lines for problems. This allows it to detect situations that could endanger the equipment, thus preventing unscheduled downtime and the costs associated with it.

The modular design of the TurCon DTm makes replacement of individual components a simple task. No additional equipment is needed to safely control steam turbines because all the relevant components are fully integrated. The result is reduced total cost of ownership (TCO) for the operator. Unlike comparable controllers, the critically important safety or TRIP relays are already integrated into the controller, making it unnecessary to install them separately. In critical process states, the TRIP relays enable reliable turbine shutdown signaling.
