Using retort containers, Hormel Foods Corp. says it has created the first shelf-stable microwavable meal that includes real eggs, the
Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal reported on April 2.
The technology behind the packaging of the new breakfast line, Compleats, includes a commercial-sized pressure cooker, which the company uses to pressurize and seal the product to extend shelf life, said Jason Baskin, Hormel's product manager for microwavable meals.
The meals take one minute to heat and are stored in the canned goods section of grocery stores.
Product varieties include a sausage breakfast scramble and a bacon breakfast scramble. Non-egg varieties include a sausage, gravy and roasted potato meal as well as an apple cinnamon oatmeal meal.
