Food prices in Russia up 1% in January amid price increases for fish, eggs, cheese, baked goods, according to government statistics

– Prices for food products in Russia increased 1.0% in Russia in January, twice as much as they did in the European Union, the Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) said.
Among the EU countries, the greatest increases in consumer prices for food products were seen in Slovakia (2.6%) and in Latvia, Slovenia, and the Czech Republic (2.0%).
In certain countries, prices went down in January - 1.7% in Cyprus, 1.0% in Malta, and 0.1%-0.4% in the Netherlands, Ireland, France, and Denmark.
In Russia, and in the EU on average, the most January price growth was for vegetables - 7.6% and 2.5%, respectively. Fruit prices in Russia went up 3.5%, and they averaged up 0.5% in the EU.
Prices for fish and other seafood products increased 0.7% in Russia (1.5% in the EU) and for oils and fats 0.5% (unchanged). Cheeses, other dairy products, and eggs increased 0.4% in Russia and averaged the same in the EU. Prices for baked goods and groats increased 0.2% in Russia, but went down 0.2% in the EU. Prices for meat and variety meats rose 0.1% in Russia but were flat month-on-month in the EU. Compared with last December, prices for sugar, jam, honey, chocolate, and candies in Russia went unchanged in January, but they averaged up 0.7% in the European Union countries.
In Russia, as in European Union countries, the most year-on-year price growth in January was for cheeses, other dairy products, and eggs increased 16.1% and 2.9%, respectively. Vegetable prices increased 15.3% and 2.8%, respectively. In Russia, oils and fats rose 8.3% in price (2.4% on average in the EU), fish and other seafood 7.3% (2.2%), and baked goods and groats 5.7% (0.1%). Sugar, jam, honey, chocolate, and candies increased 4.6% in Russia and 0.3% in the EU, meat and variety meats 0.4% and 1.0%, respectively. And where Russia saw fruit prices slip 0.4% for the period, they rose 0.2% in the EU.
