Northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK) pulp producer Canfor Pulp LP today announced that its March 1 list price in the U.S. will be US$1,030/tonne.
This follows the Feb. 24 announcement by Domtar Corp.
Canfor Pulp had announced a price of $1,010/tonne (up $20tonne) for Dec. 1, but this was not followed in the market. However, some other NBSK producers announced the $1,010/tonne price for January, and it succeeded and held in February.
Today Södra Cell AB in Sweden announced that it will increase its March 1 NBSK list price in Europe to $940/tonne. Canfor Pulp had announced the $940/tonne price for Dec. 1, but it was not supported by the market; the company said this is still its announced price.
Some other NBSK producers announced a $930/tonne plan for Europe for February. The price has gradually been moving up in recent months since producers announced to $920/tonne, up $20/tonne, for Nov. 1, which wasn’t all immediately implemented.
On Feb. 24, Canfor Pulp announced a $10/tonne March 1 list price increase for Asia markets, saying this would bring the benchmark pricing for its premium reinforcing-grade NBSK to $780/tonne. Some other bleached softwood kraft pulp (BSKP) producers have announced March 1 $10/tonne increases for China/Asia, as well.
Canfor Pulp, based in Vancouver, British Columbia, has three mills in Prince George, British Columbia. Two mills produce NBSK exclusively, including 590,000 tonnes/year at the Northwood mill and 320,000 tonnes/year at the Intercontinental mill. The third mill, the Prince George mill, produces 120,000 tonnes/year of unbleached kraft pulp (UKP), 15,000 tonnes/year of semi-bleached pulp and 135,000 tonnes/year of kraft paper.
