WASHINGTON , February 6, 2014 (press release) – A kitchen design in Orlando, Fla., has been selected as Room of the Year in the 2013 Best in American Living Awards (BALA) by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).

Designed and built by Phil Kean Design Group of Winter Park, Fla., the focus of the kitchen remodel, in a home on Lake Tibet, was to open it up to the home's stunning lake views and take full advantage of the outdoor lifestyle that Florida has to offer.

With style, entertaining and storage in mind, the kitchen cabinets provide ample hidden storage including a hidden computer station, hidden pantry with second refrigerator and storage beneath both islands.

For entertaining, corner pocketing doors open the kitchen to the lanai. To allow in light but maintain privacy from adjacent homes, the rear wall of the kitchen was framed out with frosted glass, which also adds a focal point to the space.

“The kitchen is often the place where people end up congregating so it just makes sense to take advantage of the lake views and space to create a room that is both beautiful and useful,” said 2013 BALA Judge Chairman Victor Mirontschuk, president of EDI International in New York City. “This is a great example of a room that is both stunning for entertaining and practical for every-day use.”

In its 30th year, BALA recognizes outstanding achievement by builders and design professionals in all sectors of the residential housing industry including single-family production, custom, rental, affordable, interiors, remodeling, community and international, based on the principle that good design is not and should not be limited to high-priced and/or custom homes. Even the simplest, most affordable homes can receive an award if they showcase good design.

Award winners were announced during the annual NAHB International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas.

Additional Information about the BALA program can be found at www.nahb.org/BALA, including the 2013 BALA Portfolio, featuring a review of design trends and scores of project photographs.
