TACOMA, Washington , January 27, 2014 (press release) – Discussion will focus on techniques for efficient, cost-effective framing practices featured in APA's Advanced Framing Construction Guide.

APA technical experts will present Advanced Framing: Maximizing the Value & Efficiency of Wood Wall Systems, an education session, at the 2014 NAHB (National Association of Home Builders) International Builders' Show (IBS), the largest annual light construction show in the world. A similar program presented by APA at last year's IBS drew a crowd of more than 200.

The session highlights framing techniques that produce energy efficient, structurally sound homes while lowering material and labor costs. Details presented in the seminar are featured in the Advanced Framing Construction Guide, Form M400, an APA publication now available for free download.

Advanced Framing: Maximizing the Value & Efficiency of Wood Wall Systems will be presented on Thursday, February 6. The session is approved for continuing education credit by the National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB = 1 hour) and the American Institute of Architects (AIA - 1 LU hour).

Advanced Framing: Maximizing the Value & Efficiency of Wood Wall Systems

Description: Advanced Framing, also known as Optimum Value Engineering (OVE), is the name given to a set of techniques used in wood-frame construction that relies on framing members stacked directly over each other at all levels from roof to foundation at greater than 16" on center spacing. Advanced Framing also includes practices such as single top plate wall construction, ladder junctions at wall intersections, two-stud wall corners and right-sized headers to eliminate all redundant studs, headers, blocking and bridging. Through a variety of case studies, this session will review how advanced framing techniques are implemented in construction, and show how they eliminate unnecessary lumber, reduce construction costs, promote energy efficiency and maximize insulation value. You will also learn how implementing advanced framing techniques can contribute towards obtaining green building certification.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Learn about advanced framing techniques and how they can be implemented to create a complete structural system that provides a direct, vertical load path through stacking the framing from the roof to the foundation.
  • Understand how using advanced framing techniques can dramatically decrease the amount of lumber and labor needed and as a result, significantly lower overall construction costs.
  • Learn how advanced framing techniques promote energy efficiency by reducing thermal losses and maximizing the space for insulation.
  • Find out how using these advanced framing techniques can earn points towards green building certification.
